It is with a heavy heart that I bring to you the sad news that Angela Choi passed away this past weekend, surrounded by a loving family at St. Paul’s hospital in Vancouver.

 

C’est avec une profonde tristesse que je vous annonce le décès d’Angela Choi survenue la fin de semaine passée.  Cette dernière était entourée de sa famille bien-aimée à l’hôpital St. Paul’s de Vancouver.

 

Angela joined the Department of Communications in 1990 as a Cable Engineer and has since been an integral member of the spectrum program in what is now Industry Canada. She was a key member of the spectrum team during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. More recently, Angela has been the project manager of the Fee Working Group and a driving force behind developing new approaches to licence fees in Canada.

Angela s’est jointe au ministère des Communications en 1990 en tant qu’ingénieure en communication câblée et a fait partie intégrante du programme du spectre au sein du Ministère maintenant appelé Industrie Canada. Elle a été un membre important de l’équipe du spectre lors des Jeux olympiques et paralympiques d'hiver de 2010. Plus récemment, Angela a été la gestionnaire de projet responsable du Groupe de travail sur les droits de licence et une force motrice pour le développement de nouvelles approches concernant les droits de licence au Canada. 

 

Angela is remembered by her colleagues past and present from across Canada as a highly skilled and knowledgeable professional who was passionate about all facets of spectrum management. Every day that I worked with Angela, I found myself inspired by her commitment to her work and by her true dedication as a public servant.

 

Tous les collègues d’Angela (anciens et présents) à la grandeur du pays se souviendront d’elle comme d’une spécialiste hautement qualifiée et expérimentée qui était passionnée par l’ensemble des facettes de la gestion du spectre. Chaque jour où j’ai travaillé avec Angela, j’ai été inspiré par sa passion pour son travail et son dévouement exceptionnel à titre de fonctionnaire.

 

We remember Angela as well as a great explorer, whether hiking the trails on the North Shore or travelling to many exotic,  faraway lands around the world. Most of all, we remember Angela as a caring and compassionate friend, with her wonderful sense of humour and her enthusiasm for life and the world around us.

Nous nous souvenons également d’Angela comme d’une grande exploratrice, que ce soit pour ses randonnées pédestres dans le North Shore ou ses voyages dans de nombreux pays exotiques et lointains. Mais avant tout, nous nous souvenons d’Angela en tant qu’amie bienveillante et pleine de compassion, qui avait un merveilleux sens de l’humour et qui était passionnée par la vie et par le monde qui nous entoure. 

 

Angela’s family, including her siblings, Yuk Ping Lau, Lily Wong and Colin Chui, extend to you their sincere appreciation for the many kind words of sympathy that so many of you have extended over this past week.

 

La famille d’Angela, notamment ses sœurs, Yuk Ping Lau et Lily Wong, ainsi que son frère, Colin Chui, sont très reconnaissants pour les nombreux témoignages de sympathie reçus au cours de la fin de semaine.

1962 - 2015

 

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Angela Soi Van Choi on August 15, 2015.

 

Born March 31, 1962 in Macau, and making Vancouver home since 1980. Predeceased by her parents, Sek-Yu and Oi Kuan Chui. Angela is survived by sisters Yuk Ping (Al) and Lily (John), and brother Colin (Kan). She will be missed by 7 nieces and nephews and 8 grandnieces and grandnephews.

 

With Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering from UBC, she was offered a position at MIT but chose to serve our country as a civil servant at Industry Canada for over 20 years. Her peers know her as a hard-working team member, a leader and role model with an admirable work ethic.

 

An avid hiker, world traveller and adventurer, she also enjoyed film festivals and live entertainment, while finding time to volunteer with various causes.

 

To celebrate her life, services will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, located at 3789 Royal Oak Avenue in Burnaby. A Visitation will be held Wednesday September 2, 2015 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m., and Funeral Service Thursday September 3, 2015 at 1 p.m. with Reception to follow at 3:00 p.m. In Angela's memory, please make a donation to your favourite charity in lieu of flowers.

 

 

Angela was a thoughtful and very skilled engineer with a fine sense of humour. It is hard to believe she has left us so soon. I will always remember her patiently explaining the basics of engineering analysis when her reports dealt with controversial topics. When Industry Canada was preparing for the Winter Olympics Angela was an unmatched source of expertise and her estimates were always of the best quality.

All of us who had the privilege of working with her will forever miss her companionship.

After working together with Angela daily now for many years I am going to miss our many great conversations about engineering, economics and the wonders of the world around us. I worked closely with Angela from the Ottawa Office of Industry Canada. She was one of the hardest, intelligent and most dedicated person that I ever met here at Spectrum Management. I had the pleasure of meeting Angela Choi in December 2009 when I drove across Canada to deliver a spectrum monitoring vehicle to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics. ( Click here for story ). My meeting with Angela was short but it was enough to see how passionate she was about her work in spectrum management. I am so sorry to hear about her passing. My condolences go out to her family, colleagues and friends.
