Wilfred Newman "Newt" Bryer

Began as a Radio Operator with the Radio Aviation Division of the Department of Transport in 1939. Transferred to British Security Co-Ordination at Camp X in Whitby, Ontario in 1942. Returned to the Department of Transport at the end of World War II and left the Department of Transport in 1946.

My dad Wilfred Newman "Newt" Bryer was a radio operator. After getting his Radio Second Class Certificate in 1939, my dad first worked on a ship which went to Havana, Cuba and returned to Montreal where dad had no more thoughts of shipboard marine radio (seasickness).

 

He then worked for the Department of Transport (DOT) in the Radio Aviation Division at Pagwa, Ontario and at Porquis Junction, Ontario from 1939 to 1942.

 

From 1942 to 1945, he served with British Security Coordination at Camp X in Whitby, Ontario. He was apparently a radio and morse code instructor. (he never talked about Camp X).

 

He returned to the Department of Transport at the end of World War II and left their employ in March of 1946. His last days with the DOT were spent at Goderich, Ontario and at the Stirling Radio Range.

 

After the DOT he worked at "White Brothers" in North Bay, ON and subsequently at the Ontario Northland Railway as one of two radio repair men, retiring from the ONR in 1976.

 

My dad was also a long standing radio amateur since 1932. His call sign was VE3HF.

 

He was born September 11 1912 and died on November 16 1990.

 

I have enclosed a copy of his Second Class certificate which is dated June 26th, 1939 and a copy of his Amateur Radio certificate (VE3HF) which is dated 28th March, 1932. I have also enclosed a copy of his marks (results) when he took the DOT Second Class Radio exam in 1939 as well as a copy of his resignation request to Mr. G. E. McDowell in March 1946

Please find attached the front and back pages of the 1932-33 "Licence to use Radio" for VE3HF issued by the Department of Marine 1st of April 1932. As you can see, it is licence #50 as opposed to the Amateur Proficiency Certificate #1442. I also have a photograph (somewhere around here) of dad and Walter Haigh (another DOT operator?) in a canoe taken (dated) June 12 1940 on the Pagwachuan River at Pagwa. When I find it I'll let you know... Thanks again for your efforts...
